Yoma’s Food Map: Cafeteria Lagos, Hans and Rene

Hi guysssssss!

Omo! I don’t even know what to say guys! 2022 has really been an interesting and unexpected year, because not once did I ever think that I’ll blog about anything in Lagos, but I’ve been here for a minute now, and I guess I finally gave myself permission to do so, because I still don’t know if I’m staying, but why waste the opportunity to show you guys what my life here is like?

I’m still figuring a lot of things out, but that’s not what y’all are here for, or maybe it is, but that’s not what we’re doing today, lol!

So let’s get into this post, shall we?

Okay first things first, I’m so grateful that Cafeteria offers breakfast food all day long, because I’m what I like to call deliberate, lol. What this means is that I’m slow as hell on my feet. I’m the most whimsical person you’ll ever meet, so it takes me hours to get ready on a regular day, and on this day I was trying out a new makeup look. I’m still a rookie, but I do quite like how it came out. I don’t know that I’ll recommend you copying a look you found on tik tok or instagram though, because they don’t show you their outtakes. You can learn a lot, and God can speak to you through anything and anyone, but just have realistic expectations, and know that it could take you 2 hours to try that 30 second look out, and you’d probably have to make a lot of readjustments, but it could indeed come out nice.

Cafeteria does indeed have that cafe feel, and it honestly reminded me of my days as a student in uni. We had these cafeterias, and it would be chock full of students and that’s what this felt like. It was almost always full, and I literally had people sitting beside me that were touching me unintentionally, because it was a little cramped.

The space inside is simple and functional, the design rustic, and decor sparse, but it all came together nicel for what it is if you ask me.

Your food comes out of a closed off kitchen window, and your server brings it to you. It all looks a little disorganized, but I guess it works for them, so it’s cool.

I ordered the Berry Bliss pancakes, after much deliberation even though I wanted the French toast, because I try to respect my no bread diet, and I’ve found pancakes to be an amazing substitute to bread if you love bread, but can’t eat it often for whatever reason like me.

The pancakes were warm, moist and fluffy. Every time I bit into a blueberry it was a cold burst of juicy, fruity flavor that just added something to the dish. The berry sauce was very nice as well. Not too sweet, but the flavor was still very intense. Honestly the pancakes were so deliciou. There was something so comforting about its warmth.

My pancakes came with a side of eggs, bacon and sausage, but there was no bacon left on that Sunday which was a bummer, but I did get an extra sausage, so there will be no complaints from me. The omelette was plain and almost bland, but not quite. The sausages were delicious tho. They had this burnt flavor even though they were a little dry, but you could tell that the meat was seasoned.

I ordered a Long Island, because honestly in Lagos you drink. Don’t ask, but it’s a cultural thing tbh. Most people here are alcoholics, because the city just makes you need a drink, okay? I liked my drink, because it was really strong and that’s why I ordered it instead of a mimosa.

I was kinda full, but there was definitely space for dessert which was my plan all along anyway since I was in the middle of town already - Victoria Island - so I could finally satisfy my Hans and Rene craving.

If you don’t know that I’m a sweet tooth, then you certainly haven’t been reading my blog, lol, and let me tell y’all this craving was probably almost 3 years old. Ice Cream/Gelato is one of my weaknesses, and I’ve loved Hans and Rene gelato for time. It took me so long to find something that could compare in Istanbul, and even then there’s just no replacing that warm brownie at the bottom of your gelato and sprinkled on top combo that Hans and Rene provides me, at least not yet.

Anyway after tasting as much as I could, lol don’t judge me, I ordered the Twix, Biscuit and White Chocolate flavors. I didn’t get a brownie, because I wasn’t aware that it was now almost 5,000NGN to get my usual 3 scoops, and I wasn’t really tryna go over my 5,000NGN budget for that day.

Y’all when I tasted that Twix flavor? I had a mouthgasm. That thing is soooooo good! My goodness! They deserve all their flowers for it. I love that they decided to do a proper price increase due to the inflation instead of compromising on quality, because that’s what I loved them for. It only seemed a little bit off the way I remembered the Biscuit flavor which used to be my go to flavor. It was rich, chocolatey, and just really good. The Twix was the star of the show though. It reminded me of their honeycomb flavor that I used to love so much. I love a bit of crunch in my ice cream and this provided that.

Sorry loves I forgot to take a photo, before I started. 🤣

I thoroughly enjoyed this, and if I’m being honest, this is a typical Lagosian Sunday Afternoon. Lagosians generally have a routine lifestyle, and on Sundays most people go to church in the morning, and then go to brunch with friends after, and if you have kids all the more reason to stop at your local Cold Stone branch or Hans and Rene if you can find a branch close enough to you.

I definitely recommend Hans and Rene, they’re the most popular gelateria in town with good reason. Their prices are a bit steep, but the quality is still unmatched as far as I know. You decide if it’s worth it to you. I also loved the service. The servers were so cute and friendly, and I liked that.

Details:

A scoop of gelato: 1,600NGN

Berry Bliss Pancakes: 7,500NGN

Long Island: 4,600NGN

Love, Yoma
